ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාවේ රිච්මන්ඩ් නගරයට අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ ප්‍රථම ආගමනයත් සමග එහි වෙසෙන ශ්‍රී ලාංකික බෞද්ධ ජනයාට ශ්‍රී ලාංකික විහාරස්ථානයක අවශ්‍යයතාවය බොහෝසෙයින් දැනෙන්න පටන්ගත්තේය. එහි මූලික අදියරක් ලෙස අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේට නැවත ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාවට වැඩමවීමට ආරාධනා කොට ස්ප්‍රින්වේල් නගරයේ කුලී නිවසක නව විහාරස්ථානයක් ආරම්භ කරන ලදි.
After Venerable Soma Thera first arrived at the Richmond Temple, the devotees realised there was a need for a Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple. As the initial step to achieving this, Venerable Soma Thera was invited to visit Australia again. A small house was rented to establish the new temple.
ඉන් වසර කීපයකට පසු 1993 වර්ෂයේ මැයි විසිහය වෙනි දින, අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ සමග එක්වූ සැදැහැවත් ලාංකික පිරිසගේ සහයෝගයෙන් නොබ්ල්පාර්ක් නගරයේ නිවසක් මිලදීගන්නා ලදි.එහිදී මල්ලිකා සහ නිමල් කන්නන්ගර යුවළ කෲතවේදිත්වයෙන් මතක් කල යුතුයි. පහත ඡායාරූපයෙන් දිස්වන්නේ ඒ නිවසයි.
A few years later, on 26 May 1993, with the help of a few loyal Sri Lankan devotees, Venerable Soma Thera purchased a house in Noble Park. A photo of the new premises can be seen below.
නිවස මිලදීගැනීමෙන් අනතුරුව එහි පිලිසකර කිරීමේ කටයුතු සැදැහැවත් දායකයින් එකතුව කරනා ආකාරයත්, ගොඩනැගිලි අරමුදල සවිමත් කිරීම අරඹයා එවකට සිටි දායක පිරිස ආහාර පොලකට සූදානම්වෙන ආකාරයකුත්, විහාරස්ථානයේ නාමපුවරුව “BUDDHIST VIHARA VICTORIA inc.“ නමින් විවෘතකල ආකරයත් පහත පින්තූර වලින් දිස්වෙයි.
After purchasing the new premises, it had to be renovated to be suitable for a Buddhist Temple. In the pictures below, pious devotees can be seen carrying out this work. To raise funds for the new building, devotees also held a food fair. Pictures show the preparation for the food fair.
එහිදී අතිපූජ්‍ය මඩිහේ පඤ්ඤාසීහ මහානායක ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ ගෞරවණීය වැඩමවීමෙන් කුඩා දරුවන්හට දහමිපාසැලක් ප්‍රථමවරට ආරම්භ කෙරුණා. එහි සිටි සමහර දෙමව්පියන් පිරිසක් සහ ලමුන් පිරිසකගේ (ලමා සීලසමාදානයකුත් සමග) ඡායරූප කීපයක් පහතින් දිස්වේ.ඒ සමගම අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ ස්ප්‍රින්වේල් විහාරස්ථානයේ ආරම්භ කෙරුණ විදේශීය තරුණ පිරිස් වෙනුවෙන් කල ධර්ම සාකච්ඡාද එලෙසින්ම නෝබ්ල්පාර්ක් විහාරස්ථානයේදීත් පවත්වාගෙන ගිය සැටිද පහතින් පෙනේ.එපමණක් නොව අප සැමට ආදර්ශයක් වෙමින් ලේදන්දීමේ වැඩසටහනක්ද ආරම්භ කල සැටි මෙහී අපූරුවට දිස්වෙයි.
The Most Venerable Madihe Pannaseha Mahanayaka Thera was invited to visit the new premises and with his blessings, a new Dhamma School was established. The pictures show a group of parents and children, who observed a meditation retreat (Sil) on that occasion. The dhamma discussion programme for youth from the mainstream community, that had begun at the previous temple, was continued in the new temple as well. A picture of these discussions can be seen below. Setting a good example to all, a blood donation campaign was also organised. You can see how this programme was begun in this picture.
නෝබ්ල්පාර්ක් විහාරස්ථානය ගොඩනැගීමෙන් කෙටිකලකට පසුව එහි ඉඩකඩ වැඩිකොට, ඉදිරිපසද විහාරස්ථානයකට උචිත ආකාරයෙන් සකස් කෙරුණා. ඒ සමගම විහාරස්ථානයට අඩුපාඩුවක්ව පැවති විශාල බුදුපිළිමවහන්සේනමක්ද ලංකාවෙන් වඩමවා ගෙන එහි රන්පත් ආලේපකරණු ලැබුවා.මෙහි පහතින් පෙනෙන්නේ එම බුදුපිළිමවහන්සේගේ රන්පත් ආලේපකිරීමත්, ඉන්පසු පිළිමවහන්සේ වඩාහිඳූවීමෙන් පසු අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ විසින් සර්වඥ ධාතූන්වහන්සේලා තැන්පත් කිරීමත්ය. ඉන්පසු දහම්පසැල් ලමුන්ගේ සීල ව්‍යාපාරයක්ද පැවතුනා. ඒ සමගම විහාරගෙය ඇතුලත එවකට සිටි දායක බැතිමතුන් සමහරක්ද, විහාරස්ථානය ඉදිරිපස අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ ඇතුළු ගෞරවණීය ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේලා සමග පින්තූර කීපයක්ද දිස්වෙයි. ඒ වකවානුවේදීම අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේට පනස්වසකුත් පිරුණු වග සහ එදින නිහඬවම මල්පූජාවකින් කල ආශීර්වාද පින්කමත් අප අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ නිහතමානීකම මොනවාට පැහැදිලි කරයි.
Soon after moving into the new premises, it was enlarged in keeping with a traditional Buddhist temple, to provide more space for the activities carried out at the temple. A new Buddha statue too was brough from Sri Lanka. It was embossed with gold leaf and placed on the pedestal. Venerable Soma Thera can be seen placing the Sacred Relics of the Buddha in the statue. Following this a meditation retreat was held for the Dhamma School children. A photograph of Venerable Soma Thera and some of the devotees can be seen. Venerable Soma celebrated his 50th birthday with a simple offering of flowers and blessings, which illustrated his humility.

Photos of the first Katthina or Sacred Robe ceremony held at the Noble Park temple can be seen below. As there was a space constraint at the new temple, the ceremony was held in a near-by hall. Early that morning, the Katthina perahera or parade can be seen leaving the temple. The sacred robe was cut and sewn according to instructions given by the Venerable Soma Thera. This was done on the day of the ceremony. The team working on the sacred robe was headed by Mrs.Piyaseeli Jayawardene who was helped by Ms. Mallika Vitharana and Mrs. Tamala Weerasinghe.

In 1995, for the first time a 5-acre property was purchased in Berwick area to construct a traditional Sri Lankan Buddhist temple. The pictures below show the beginning of the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, a temple for the welfare of the Sri Lankan Buddhists. Looking at the glory of the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara today, does not show the hard work and dedication of those people who ever loyal to Venerable Soma, toiled willingly in the muddy, boggy ground of the meadow where horses were reared.

The property at Berwick, where today the Sakyamui Sambuddha vihara stands, was discovered by Mr. Ranjith Senadheera. The design for the temple was done by Mr. Polly Werakkody according to Venerable Soma Thera’s vision. Funds for the initial deposit on the property was donated by the pious couple, Kanthi and Priyantha Obadage. The picture shows Venerable Soma, Venerable Horowpathane Sathindriya Thera, who resided at the Noble Park temple at the time, and the Most Venerable Tirikunamale Ananda Mahanayaka Thera, who was visiting at the temple, participating in this auspicious occasion.
විහාර භූමිය මිලදීගැනීමෙන් මාස කීපයකට පසු 1995 අගෝස්තු 28 වෙනිදින පළමුවරට සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරයේ මුල්ගල් තැන්පත් කිරීමේ පූජෝත්සවයට සැරසුනේ මෙසේය.
එවකට විහාර කමිටුවේ සිටි ලේකම්තුමාවන ජයන්ත සමරවීර මහතා සහ රමණී සමරවීර යුවල විසින් පොල්තෙල් පහන දැල්වීමෙන් පසු සැවොම තිසරණ සරණගොස් එදිනට නියමිත වැඩ ආරම්භ කරනලදි. එහිදී අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිලසෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේට පසු පළමු පස්පිඩැල්ල කැපීමට පැවරුනේ මීලඟට යොදාගැනීමට නියමිතව තිබූ පැලසිටවීමේ ව්‍යාපෘතියේ මූලික සැලසුම්කරණ කටයුතු භාරව සිටි වෝල්ටර් පීටර්ස් මහතාටයි. එහිදී අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේට පසුව ශ්‍රි ලංකාවෙන් වැඩමකලාවූ වර්තමාන අතිපූජ්‍ය මහානායක තිරිකුණාමලේ ආනන්දස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ අතින්ද මුල්ගලක් තැන්පත් කෙරුණු ආකාරය පහත ඡයාරූපයකින් දිස්වේ.
A few months after purchasing the property at Berwick, on the 28th of August 1995, a foundation stone for the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara was laid for the first time.
The photos below show the preparations for the ceremony.The work commenced after the oil lamp was lit by the then secretary of the Buddhist Vihara Victoria association, Mr. Jayantha Samaraweera and his wife Ramani, all those present observed the three refuges and the five precepts. After Venerable Soma Thera, Mr. Walter Peters, who was in charge of the tree planting event, which was next on the agenda, was asked to cut the first sod. After Venerable Soma placed the foundation stone, Venerable Tirikunamale Ananda Thera, the current most Venerable Mahanayaka Thera, who was visiting at that time also placed a foundation stone. බෙරික් විහාර භූමියෙහි මීළඟ ව්‍යාපෘතිය වූයේ අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ මූලිකම අදහසක් වූ භාවනා සෙනසුනක අරමුණින් මනා සැලසුමක් ඇතිව පැළ රෝපණය කිරීමයි. එම පින්කම 1997වර්ෂයේදී අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ සහ වජිරාමාධිකාරී අතිපූජ්‍ය පියදස්සී හිමියන්ගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් සිදුකෙරුණි.
The next event held at the temple premises in Berwick was tree planting ceremony that would make Venerable Soma Thera’s vision of a meditation retreat a reality. This ceremony was held in 1997 lead by Venerable Soma Thera and the then incumbent monk of Vajirarama Temple in Sri Lanka, Venerable Piyadassi Thera.
සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාර පළමු අදියරේ වැඩ ආරම්භ කරන ලද්දේ 2001 වර්ෂයේදීය. එහි අත්තිවාරම් කැපීම පිණිස බිම සූදානම් කිරීමත්, ඉන්පසු ක්‍රමයෙන් ගොඩනැගිල්ල ඉදිවෙන ආකාරයත් පහත ඡායාරුප කීපයෙන් දිස්වේ.
එක් ඡායාරුපයක අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ සමග විහාරස්ථානයේ සැලසුම අඳිනුලැබූ ගෘහනිර්මාණ ශිල්පී, පොලී වීරක්කොඩි මහතාද, ව්‍යාපෘති කලමණකරු සහ එවකට විහාර කමිටුවේ ලේකම්තුමාද වූ කෝසළ ජයසිංහ මහතාද, එවකට සිටි උපසභාපති වූ සමන් ප්‍රනාන්දු මහතා සහ භාණ්ඩාගාරික වූ මංගල සොයිසා මහතාද සිටී. විහාර ගොඩනැගිල්ලේ විදුලි පද්ධතිය සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම සිදුකෙරුනේ අධිකාරි බණ්ඩාර මහතා අතිනි.
In 2001, the first stage of the building construction work on the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara commenced. The photos below show the ground being prepared and the early structure of the building. In one of the photographs with Venerable Soma Thera are, the architect of the temple design, Polly Weerakkody, the Project Manager of the first stage and Secretary of BVV Kosala Jayasinghe, the then Vice President, Saman Fernando and the treasurer Mangala de Silva. The wiring and electrical work on the building was done entirely by Mr. Adikari Bandara.

එහිදී ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාවේ තිබෙන එකම බෞද්ධ විනයකර්ම සීමාව බෙරික් විහාරස්ථාන භූමියේ සම්මතකිරීම අතිපූජ්‍ය මඩිහේපඤ්ඤාසීහ මහානායක ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ විසින් සිදු කෙරුණි. ඒ සඳහා නිමිති කීර්තනය කිරීමට සම්බන්ධවූයේ රෝහණ අරඹෙවෙල මහතායි. බෞද්ධ කොඩිය එසවීම සඳහා කොඩිගසක් සාදවා පූජා කරණු ලැබුවේ ශාන්ත සහ නයනී මුහන්දිරම් යුවළයි. අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ විසින් නේත්‍රා පූජාවන් කරනලද බුදුපිළිමවහන්සේගේ සර්වඥ ධාතූන්වහන්සේලා තැන්පත් කිරීමත් එදිනම සිදුකෙරුණි. අතිපූජ්‍ය මඩිහේපඤ්ඤාසීහ මහානායක ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ සහ අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ විසින් බෞද්ධ කොඩිය එසවීමත් සමග තවත් පින්කම් රාශියක් එදින සිදුකෙරුණා.
The first stage of the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, the monks’ residence, was ceremoniously opened in the year 2002. An account of special events that took place on that occasion are given below:
The opening ceremony was reverentially conducted by the most Venerable Madihe Mahanayaka Thera, the current Mahanayaka Thera, the most Venerable Tirikunamale Ananda Thera, and Venerable Soma Thera and other monks with the current chief monk of Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, Venerable Dhigamadulle Wimalanandha Thera participating on that occasion.
The specific area marked as the “vinayakarma seemawa”, the only one in Australia and it has been confirmed (Seemasammathaya) by the most Venerable Madihe Pannasiha Mahanayaka Thera. (The vinayakarma seemawa can be built only in a space that does not have anything man made creations overhead or underground – a pure area,) Mr. Rohana Arambewela was there for “Nimithi Keerthanaya” (answered for the purity of the specific area).
The Buddha statue that was at the temple at Rich Street again took pride of place, having had the eyes on the statue ceremoniously painted (Nethra Puja) by Venerable Soma Thera himself. Placing the sacred relics of the Enlightened One inside the statue was also carried out on this occasion. The unfurling of the Buddhist Flag by the Most Venerable Madihe Mahanayaka Thera and the most Venerable Soma Thera, was followed by many more religious events. The flagpole for the Buddhist flag was donated by Shantha and Nayani Muhandiram.
අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ අනුදැනුම ඇතිව, උන්වහන්සේගේ විශේෂ ආකෘතියකට අනුව බෙරික් සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරස්ථානයේ පලමු මල් ආසනය ලංකාවේ සාදාගෙන යන අයුරු පහත ඡායාරූප වලින් පෙනේ. එය සාදවා පූජාකරන ලද්දේ නීලා සහ ලින්දර විජේරත්න යුවල විසිනි.
The first table on which to offer flowers at the Berwick Temple was made on a special model designed by Venerable Soma Thera. The table was made in Sri Lanka, as can be seen in these photos. The table was donated by Neela and Lindara Wijeratne.
විවෘත කිරීමේ පුණ්‍යෝත්සවයේ තවත් අංගයක් ලෙස, නව විහාරස්ථානය ඇතුළු සැදැහැවත් බැතිමතුන්ටත් ආශීර්වාද පිණිස පිරිත් පින්කමක්ද සිදුකෙරුණි. සාම්ප්‍රදායික සර්වරාත්‍රික පිරිත් සජ්ජායනාවක් වෙනුවට රාත්‍රීහතක් තිස්සේ පිරිත් සජ්ජායනාව පැවැත්වීය. නව විහාර විවෘතකිරීමේ පුණ්‍යෝත්සවයා නිමාවීමත් සමගම ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙන් වැඩමකලාවූ අතිපූජ්‍ය මඩිහේපඤ්ඤාසීහ මහානායක ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ ඇතුළු අනෙකුත් ගෞරවණීය ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේලාත් ආපසු ලංකාව බලා වැඩමවූයේය. ඒ සමග අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේද කෙටිකලකට ලංකාව බලා වැඩමකරන ලදි.
As part of the opening ceremonies, a pirith chanting ceremony, to bless the temple and the faithful devotees, was conducted. Departing from the traditional pirith chanting ceremonies, Venerable Soma Thera had decided to chant the pirith over seven evenings instead of having an all-night pirith chanting ceremony.
After all the ceremonies were completed, the Venerable Madihe Pannasiha Mahanayaka Thera and the other monks who were visiting from Sri Lanka returned to Sri Lanka. Venerable Soma Thera too, went back to Sri Lanka.
2003වර්ෂයේදි අතිපූජ්‍ය මඩිහේ පඤ්ඤාසීහ මහානායක ස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ අපවත්වී වදාළසේක. උන්වහන්සේගේ ආදාහන පූජෝත්සවයේ සියලු වැඩකටයුතු සංවිධානය කිරීමේලා මූලිකව සොයාබලා කටයුතු සිදුකෙරුනු ලැබූයේ අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ විසිනි. ඉන්වැඩිකලක් නොගොස් ශාන්ත පීටර්ස්බර්ග්හී පෞද්ගලික විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයක ප්‍රධානියාගේ ආරාධනයකට අනුව අප අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ රුසියාවට යාමට තීරණය කරන ලදි. ඊටපෙර උන්වහන්සේ රුසියානු විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයක ආදි ශිෂ්‍යයෙකු වූ සහ 1996 – 1998 කාලයේදී එහි සේවයකළ කෝසල ජයසිංහ මහතාට කතාකිරීමට උත්සාහ කලත් එය නොහැකි වී ඇත.
එදා රුසියාවට වැඩමකරන අතරේදී උන්වහන්සේට හෘදයාබාධයක් ඇතිවූයේයැයි කියන ආරංචිය අපසැමදෙනාටම ඉමහත් කම්පනයක් විය. එය ඇසූවහාම කෝසල ජයසිංහ මහතා එවකට මොස්කව් නුවර වසන ශ්‍රී ලංකික ව්‍යාපාරිකයන්පිරිසට කතාකොට අප අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ සුභසාධනය ගැන සහ උන්වහන්සේව ප්‍රතිකාර සඳහා මොස්කව් නගරයට වඩමවාගැනීමට උත්සාහ කරනලදි. ඒ කටයුතු සඳහා එවකට රුසියාවේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා තානාපතිවරයා වූ යූ.බී.වන්නිනායක මහතාද සහායපළ කර ඇත.
එනමුදු අප අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ තමන්වහන්සේ සිටි රෝහලෙන් පිටවීම ප්‍රතික්ක්‍ෂේප කරනලදි. ඒ අතරතුර ශ්‍රී ලංකික ව්‍යාපාරිකපිරිස උන්වහන්සේගේ ශල්‍යකර්මය සඳහා අරමුදල් රැස්කරනලදි. එවකට මොස්කව්හී වෙසෙන ශ්‍රී ලංකිකයන් දෙපළක් වන රූපසිරි පෙරේරා සහ දොස්තර කරූ යන මහත්වරුන් අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ වැඩසිටි රෝහලවෙත පැමිණ එම අරමුදල් උන්වහන්සේවෙතට පූජා කරණුලැබුවේය. ඉන්පසු දෙවනුවට ගිය අවස්ථාවේදී රූපසිරි පෙරේරා මහතා අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ වෙත දානයක්ද පූජා කර සැහෙන වේලාවක් කතාකරමින්ද සිට ඇත.
මීලඟට ලැබුනු ආරංචිය වූයේ ලෝවැසි සියළුම බෞද්ධ ජනයා අතීශය කම්පනයට පත්කල අප අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ අපවත්වීවදාළ වගයි.
අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේට ගෞරවදැක්වීම සඳහා ආදාහනය පූජෝත්සවයට රැස්වසිටි ජනගඟ උන්වහන්සේ කොතරම් අප ශ්‍රී ලංකික ජනතාවගේ හදවත් ස්පර්ශකොට ඇත්දැයි මොනවාට පැහැදිලි කරනලදි.
ආදාහනය පූජෝත්සවයට පසුදිනම එවකට අනුනායක අතිපූජ්‍ය තිරිකුණාමලේ ආනන්දස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ, අපවත්වී වදාළ අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ භෂ්මාවශේෂ ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාවේ උන්වහන්සේගේ “සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරස්ථාන“ භූමියෙහි තැන්පත්කිරීම පිණිස එම ආදාහනය පූජෝත්සවයට සහභාගී වූ කෝසල සහ ජීන් ජයසිංහ යුවලවෙත බාරකරනලදි.
එම භෂ්මාවශේෂ තැන්පත්කිරීමෙහිලා විශේෂ ස්මාරකය නිර්මාණය කරනුලැබූවේ පොලී වීරක්කොඩි මහතායි. ස්මාරකය ඉදිකිරීමෙන් අනතුරුව උන්වහන්සේගේ සමීපතම මිතුරෙකුවූ බර්ට්‍රම් ඩයස් මහතා විසින් පරිත්‍යාග කරනලද විශේෂිතවූ මංජුසාවක අපවත්වී වදාළ අප අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ භෂ්මාවශේෂ එම ස්මාරකයේ තැන්පත් කරනලදි. එහි ඡායාරුපයක් පහතින් දිස්වේ.
In 2003 the most Venerable Madhe Pannasiha Thera passed away. Venerable Soma had worked hard to organise and oversee the work involved with conducting the funeral of the late Prelate. Soon after, Venerable Soma decided to travel to Russia having received an invitation from the Head of a Private University in St. Petersburg. Venerable Soma had tried to speak to Mr. Kosala Jayasinghe, an alumni of a Russian University and who had worked in Russia in 1996-1998 but was unable to contact him.
The news that Soma Thera had suffered a heart attack while travelling to Russia was a shock to everyone. Immediately upon hearing this, Kosala Jayasinghe, contacted Sri Lankan businessmen in Moscow to make inquiries about Venerable Soma’s welfare and to see if Venerable Soma could be transported to Moscow for treatment. The then Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia, Mr. U.B. Wanninayaka also supported the businessmen in this effort.
Venerable Soma, however, refused to leave the hospice where he was residing. The businesspeople in Moscow raised funds as payment for an operation. Mr Rupasiri Perera who was accompanied by a Dr. Karu, both Sri Lankans living in Moscow, took the funds and travelled to the hospice where he met and spoke to Venerable Soma. The money was given to Venerable Soma. On a second visit, Rupasiri, had offered food (dana) to Venerable Soma and had a long conversation with him. Soon after, the news of Venerable Soma’s demise was received sending shock waves among all those who knew and venerated him.
The crowds that gathered to show their respects to Venerable Soma Thera at his funeral showed just how much he had touched the hearts and minds of the people of Sri Lanka. The day after the funeral, the then Anunayake Thera, Venerable Tirikunamale Ananda Thera, made arrangements for some of the ashes (Bhasmawasesha) to be taken back to Australia, to be kept at the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, Venerable Soma’s Temple. These were brought to Australia by Kosala and Jeanne Jayasinghe, who had attended the funeral of Venerable Soma. A memorial was built, designed by Polly Weerakkody and the ashes were placed inside in an urn that was donated by Mr Bertram Dias, a close friend of Venerable Soma. මේ සිදුවීම් අතරේ බෙරික් සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරයේ අනෙකුත් ගොඩනැගිලි වැඩකටයුතුද පටන්ගැනුනා. කොහොම නමුත් චෛයිත්‍යය ඇතුළු බෙරික් සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරයේ සියලූම ගොඩනැගිලි සඳහා ආකෘති සහ සැලසුම් අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ බෙරික් සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරස්ථානයට ගෙවදීමටද කලින් සාදාතිබුනේය.
In the meantime, other buildings were constructed. The Stupa or Chaitya that was built was designed by Venerable Soma, even before the move to Berwick.
බර්ට්‍රම් ඩයස් මහතා සැමවිටම අපවත්වීවදාළ අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ අනුස්මරණය උදෙසා උන්වහන්සේගේ පිළිරුවක් බෙරික් විහාරස්ථානයේ ඉදිකලයුතු බව මතක්කලා. එහි ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙසින් බෙරික් විහාර භාරකාරමණඩලය ඇතුලු අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ තවත් සමීපතම හිතවත්පිරිසකගේ මූලිකතවයෙන් පිළීමවහ්න්සේ නිර්මාණය කිරීමට සුදුසු මූර්ති ශිල්පියෙකු පිළිබඳව සොයාබැලීමේදී අතිපූජ්‍ය මහානායක තිරිකුණාමලේ ආනන්දස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ බේරුවල වෙසෙන ජීවමාන ලෙසින් පිළිම නිර්මාණය කරන මූර්තී ශිල්පියෙකු පිලිබඳ යෝජනා කරනලදි. එහිදී කෝසල ජයසිංහ මහතා එම මූර්ති ශිල්පියා මුණගැසී එතුමාගේ වැඩ ගැන සෑහීමටපත්ව ඒ කාර්ය ඔහුට භාරකරන් ලදි.ඒ සඳහා බරපැන යොදන ලදිදේද ඒවෙනුවන් මූලිකවූ පිරිසමයි. පිළිමවහන්සේගේ වැඩකටයුතු නිමාවත් සමග එම පිළිමවහන්සේ බෙරික් සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරස්ථානයවෙත ප්‍රවාහනය කරදෙනුලැබූවේ බර්ට්‍රම් ඩයස් මහත විසිනි.
බෙරික් සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරස්ථානයේ නිර්මාතෘ අපවත්වී වදාළ අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගේ අණුස්මරණය වෙනුවෙන් උන්වහන්සේගේ උපන්දිනේ යෙදුනාවූ අප්‍රේල් 24වෙනි දින එම පිළිමවහන්සේ නිරාවරණ පින්කම 2021 වර්ෂයේදී සිදුකෙරුණ ලදි. එදින අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේ මෙල්බෙර්න් නුවර ආරම්භකල පළමු දහම් පාසලේ ශිෂ්‍යයින් දෙදෙනෙක් වූ උපේන්ද්‍ර ජයසිංහ සහ නීශා යන තරුණ දරුවන්ද එදා අප අතිපූජ්‍ය ගංගොඩවිල සෝමස්වාමීන්වහන්සේගෙන් දරුවන්වෙනුවෙන් කෙරුනු සේවය ගැන ගුණකථනයක්ද කරන ලදි. පහතින් පෙනෙන ඡායාරුප වලින් පෙනෙන එම පිළිමවහන්සේගේ විස්තර ඇතුලත් අගනා රන්වන් පාට නාමපුවරුව සාදවා එයට සවිකරණුලැබූවේ රෝහණ අරඹේවෙල මහතා ඇතුලු පවුලේ සැමයි.
Bertram Dias was very keen to have a statue erected at Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara, as a memorial to Venerable Soma. A group of Venerable Soma’s closest followers agreed and made inquiries about a suitable sculptor to create the statue. The most Venerable Tirikunamale Ananda Mahanayaka Thero recommended a sculptor, who created lifelike statues and lived in Beruwela, as the most suitable. Kosala Jayasinghe travelled to Beruwela to meet the sculptor and commission the work. When the statue was completed, arrangements were made to ship it to Australia. Funds for this project were raised by the group from their personal funds. Bertram Dias met the cost of transporting the statue from the Australian port to the Temple. The statue was erected near the Chaitya and a simple ceremony was held on April 24, 2021. Two Children, Neesha and Upendra Jayasinghe, who had attended the Dhamma School under Venerable Soma talked about their recollections of Venerable Soma
Below is the statue of Venerable Soma Thera. . A plaque in bronze donated by Mr Rohana Arambewela can be seen on the plinth on which the statue stands.
බෙරික් විහාරස්ථානය සඳහා භූමිය මිලදීගැනීමෙපසු ගොඩනැගිලි අරමුදල සඳහා ආධාර මුදල් එකතුකිරීමේ ක්‍රමයක් ලෙසින්, එම භූමිය වර්ගමීටර් වලට බෙදා එක් වර්ගමීටරයක් 100 බැගින් මිලකර ඒ වෙනුවෙන් පරිත්‍යාගයක් කිරීමට කැමති පින්වත් පිරිසට තමන් කැමති වර්ග ප්‍රමාණයක් ලබාගැනීමට අවස්ථාව ලබාදෙනලදි. ඒ සඳහා ලබාදුන් කුවිතාන්සියේ පිටපත් වූයේ ඉදිරියේදී ඉදිවීමට නියමිතව තිබූ සාක්‍යමුණි සම්බුද්ධ විහාරස්ථානයේ ගොඩනැගිලි සහ අනෙකුත් සැලසුම්ය. එහි චායාරූපයක් පහතින් දිස්වේ.
When the property at Berwick was purchased one of the fund-raising methods was to divide the property into one metre squares. People wishing to donate could purchase a square at $100/ per square. The receipt was in the form of a ticket that had the plan of the temple buildings that would be constructed. A photograph of that ticket is shown below. This was the original plan for the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara as envisioned by Polly Weerakkody and the Late Venerable Soma Thera.
